How can CBD help improve my sleep and is it right for me?

Many of us suffer from the difficulty of falling asleep, or staying asleep. At night is your mind an endless cyclical wheel of thoughts? A never ending, broken record? Does your chronic pain make it uncomfortable to sleep at night? Break the wheel by adding the calming effects of CBD to your nighttime routine and get the good night’s sleep you’ve been missing out on! By adding CBD to their routines, many people have found it beneficial for sleep. So you may be wondering what is the truth behind CBD and sleep?

A nighttime or sleep routine can help retrain your brain and body into the right state of mind for sleep to occur. Establishing rituals such as a warm bath, reading a book, meditation or yoga; and removing screens from our bedrooms is a great way to start!

What does research say about CBD & Sleep?

In a recent study, “Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series” (Shannon, Lewis, Lee, Shannon, 2019) concludes that CBD may:

  • benefit those with anxiety-related disorders
  • 79% of anxiety scores decreased
  • 66.7% of sleep scores improved

Therefore, those with insomnia caused by anxiety may see an improvement by introducing CBD into their nightly routine.

Due to this complex relationship of the truth behind CBD and sleep is only beginning to be understood by science. The different strains of the hemp plant have differing roles in the sleep/wake cycle.

Sativa strains tend to be more stimulating and help us stay awake. While Indica are more relaxing and because of this better for those with sleep disorders like insomnia (Leonard Leinnow, 2017). Some studies find that CBD can help alleviate the daytime grogginess that a lot of us feel after lunch time!

In addition to relieving the vicious cycle of anxiety, CBD may also work with pain receptors in the body. Because of this many people find reducing these symptoms may improve sleep quality.

Are the sleep benefits of CBD right for you?

First and always work with your healthcare provider in fine tuning the best dosage for your unique endocannabinoid system and sleep needs. Several studies conclude that oral consumption is most efficient.

How much should I take?

At Kentucky’s Best Hemp we recommend starting with small dose and then increase over time to lessen the symptoms of sleeplessness. Micro-dosing is the standard for CBD. A dose of 5-10 mg usually does the trick, while some people will find 15-40 mg is most effective. Refer to our other blog posts about dosing.
