CBD for mental health is an ongoing topic in psychology and research. At this time, countless animal studies along with anecdotal evidence, have shown us that CBD may be able to help support mental health and well-being. At the time writing, it’s estimated that 20-30 percent of the population suffers from some form of anxiety or mental health disorder, including panic attacks, OCD, social or general anxiety, PTD, and mild to moderate depression. This suggests we need a safe option that can help relieve some of these issues for our fellow humans!

Many people who suffer from the above mental health disorders have turned to cannabis as a way of relief from their illnesses. However, marijuana contains THC, which can exacerbate these symptoms in many cases. These adverse side effects have many people turning to CBD to improve their mental well-being due to its lack of THC. So can CBD oil help support mental health? How might it benefit yours?

What Research is Suggesting CBD Supports Mental Health

With CBD claiming to alleviate everything from sleeplessness, pain, and anxiety, it seems to be good to be true, right? That is the general discussion amongst people, but there is some science behind how CBD affects your brain, which controls the above issues. The science and testimonials both indicate that CBD may benefit your mental health.

First, CBD is a cannabinoid that attaches itself to receptors within our endocannabinoid systems. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors in the brain that CBD attaches to – CB1 and CB2. When CBD attaches, it activates the serotonin system which can decrease feelings of anxiety. Serotonin is a brain chemical (and our friend!) that boosts your mood and sense of well-being. So in all, the research is suggesting that mental health benefits are coming from CBD, not THC.

Will CBD Oil Improve My Mental Health?

Can CBD improve your mental health? In short, maybe. At the current time in research, there is not enough academic or clinical evidence for the scientific community to say yay or nay. However, there is much anecdotal evidence by way of testimonials that discusses how CBD has helped other people. We recommend asking a friend who has experience using CBD, talking to your doctor, or trying it out yourself to see how it affects you.

Should I use CBD to treat my mental health?

So, the research results are encouraging; but more research needs to be done. And for what it is, CBD is a safe option for those not actively treating or using medications for their mental health. Please always consult your doctor before starting a CBD regimen, especially if you are taking other medications!
